Weightlifting is being reintroduced to Avele College, starting with the donation of a set of weights worth USD $2,000 by the Samoa Weightlifting Federation.
“Avele College was one of the first schools to start weightlifting back in 1972- 1974 and now we are starting again to put it back into the schools,” the President and Head Coach of the federation, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork said.
“One set of weights have been donated to them to help the young girls and boys, and bring them into the Samoa Weightlifting Federation as members and as representatives for future international tournaments.”
Tuaopepe added it was the first time the association had donated weights to a school, to promote weightlifting.
“Our plan for 2016-2017 is we want to present weights to at least 10 schools and then have…tournaments at the end of every month for these schools, to promote weightlifting and build the development of weightlifting within Samoa.
“We know that this is the best place to start.”
Avele College Principal Matafeo Reupena acknowledged the support from the Samoa Weightlifting Federation.
“We will revive weightlifting again because we were the first school to start weightlifting,” he said.
“We would like to thank the President and the Head Coach of the weightlifting federation for his kind support and for the great donation presented to Avele College today.”
It was hoped the weights would benefit the students, and encourage them to eventually become part of Samoa’s weightlifting team.
Another donation was made to the school from Seiuli Paul Wallwork, a former Principal of the college.
His son Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork presented sets of jerseys from his father to Avele College, because he could not make it.
